Raphael Vanoli - Venus by Day
During a meeting at the Performing Arts Forum, Snow in Water Records invited Raphael to build a long drone. Back in Amsterdam, this drone project crossed a distant desire, that of illustrating the visual work of his father, an amateur and passionate astronomer filming for years the planets around us. The Covid-19 arrived, and the project took on another form, being joined by many of Raphael's friends. Unlike other European countries, the free movement of people in the Netherlands (freedom based on the empowerment of each) allowed this collective creation in which nearly 22 musicians from the new international jazz and classical scene participate. In the midst of the daily count of the dead, this creation based on love and eros stands out by drawing a line of flight filled with hope.
This piece in tribute to guitarist Rolf Oppermann, who died on April 29, 2020, has an architecture based on the main motif of the cantata "Mitten Wir im Leben sind" by Johann Sebastien Bach. This motif brings together the infinitely small and the infinitely large. Like a dust whose infinite grains gradually build up a structure over a long time. A work of 120 minutes, which transforms the anxieties of a time into a dreamy summer evening.
Raphael Vanoli is a rare guitarist, working on the different modes of attacking the strings. His work related to breathing allows his sound creations to be recognized from the first notes. It makes visible a musical world, where it enlarges the microscopic rustling produced by the electric guitar. Working on sound amplification and spatialization, he produced a surprising first solo album, Bibrax, acclaimed by the specialist press. Here in Venus by Day, he continues this work in a collective creation and invites us to a surprising encounter between drone music, free improvisation and baroque counterpoint.
A first digital version, available on streaming and download platforms, will be released in early June at Snow in Water Records. A full version will be released on CD this fall. A call for projects is already launched to release an album of remixes.

Lors d'une rencontre au Performing Arts Forum, Snow in Water Records invita Raphael a construire un long drone. De retour à Amsterdam, ce projet de drone croisa un lointain désir, celui d'illustrer le travail visuel de son père, un astronome amateur et passionné filmant depuis des années les planètes qui nous entourent.
Le Covid-19 arriva, et le projet prit une autre allure, en étant ralliés par de nombreux amis de Raphaël. Contrairement aux autres pays européens, la libre circulation des êtres aux Pays-Bas (liberté fondée sur la responsabilisation de chacun) permit cette création collective où participent près de 22 musiciens de la nouvelle scène jazz et classique internationale.
En plein décompte journalier des morts, cette création fondée sur l'amour et l'éros se distingue en dessinant une ligne de fuite remplie d'espoir.

Ici, dans Venus by Day, il poursuit ce travail en collectif et nous invite à une rencontre surprenante entre la musique drone, l'improvisation libre et le contrepoint baroque.
