Larbjo - Divergent Surroundings
Sound is more than an acoustic phenomenon; it is a sensory force shaping how we perceive and inhabit the world. Unlike vision, which frames reality within fixed boundaries, sound moves fluidly through space and uncovers dimensions that remain unseen. It carries traces of movement, material, texture, and energy, mapping environments in ways that challenge the primacy of sight. Through sound, the world becomes porous, alive with vibrations that connect us to what lies beyond the surface. Listening turns this experience into inquiry, drawing our attention not only to the sonic presence of solid structures, moving machinery, and living beings but also to the intervals—the pauses, echoes, and resonances that shape relationships within a soundscape. Listening, then, is a way of sensing the architecture of the unseen, an exploration of what lies beneath and beyond.
The work of Lars Bjork (aka Larbjo) begins from this premise: that sound is both material and method. Inspired by experimental visual practices such as collage and cut-up, he approaches sonic environments as layered terrains to be excavated, reconfigured, and reimagined. By juxtaposing fragments, peeling back layers, and tracing unexpected trajectories, structures are revealed that might otherwise have remained unknown. The microphone, along with hardware and software tools, becomes an instrument of investigation, allowing him to dig deeper, uncover hidden resonances, and transform sonic remnants into new configurations.
This process is a creative act of exploration. Each composition unfolds as a dialogue between presence and absence, between what is heard and what remains concealed.
